Wrapping Up Dorico’s Play Mode and Moving to Engrave Mode<\/h2>

In this post, we\u2019re wrapping up Dorico\u2019s Play Mode and preparing to dive into Engrave Mode and advanced workflow tips in future episodes. Today, we\u2019ll cover two useful tools in Dorico: Comments<\/strong> and Video<\/strong>. Let\u2019s get started!<\/p>

Comments Tool<\/h3>

The Comments tool allows you to annotate your score for future reference. Here\u2019s how to use it:<\/p>

  1. Highlight the spot where you want to add a comment.<\/li>
  2. Click the “+” button at the bottom and type your note. For example, “Hello!”<\/li>
  3. You can reply to your own comments or collaborate with others by clicking the reply button.<\/li><\/ol>

    Dorico displays only the commenter’s name (e.g., “Homayoon”) rather than the text directly, which could be improved with a toggle to show\/hide the comment text. A helpful feature here is the Export<\/strong> option:<\/p>

    • Click Export to generate a list of all comments, including bar numbers, instruments, and timing. It\u2019s a great way to keep track of your notes!<\/li><\/ul>

      You can delete comments easily by pressing Backspace or Delete.<\/p>

      Video Tool<\/h3>

      Adding and managing videos in Dorico is straightforward. Here\u2019s how to attach a video:<\/p>

      1. In the Setup<\/strong> tab, right-click on the flow in the Flow section.<\/li>
      2. Select Video<\/strong> and click Attach<\/strong> to add your video file.<\/li><\/ol>

        After attaching the video, the following options are available in the Video Properties<\/strong> window:<\/p>

        • Video Frame Rate<\/strong>: Adjust to match the project\u2019s frame rate.<\/li>
        • Beat Unit<\/strong>: Set this to match the beat unit in your score.<\/li>
        • Start Offset<\/strong>: Use this to delay the video\u2019s start time (e.g., for a conductor\u2019s count-in).<\/li><\/ul>

          Using the Video in Write Mode<\/h4>

          To bring up the video:<\/p>

          • Click the reel icon in Write Mode, and the video window will appear.<\/li><\/ul>

            You can control playback with keyboard shortcuts:<\/p>

            • Play\/Pause<\/strong>: F8<\/li>
            • Rewind\/Fast Forward<\/strong>: F7\/F9<\/li><\/ul>

              Adding markers is simple:<\/p>

              1. Position the playhead where you want the marker.<\/li>
              2. Press Alt + Shift + M<\/strong> and name your marker (e.g., “Scene Change”).<\/li>
              3. Use the “Important” checkbox to bold critical markers.<\/li><\/ol>

                Additional Video Options<\/h3>

                In the Video Properties<\/strong>, you can also:<\/p>

                • Adjust the timecode start to align the video with your project.<\/li>
                • Set a start offset for individual flows, allowing you to work with different sections of the same video file across multiple flows.<\/li><\/ul>
